An actual account of working through the process

A recent client of mine shared their thoughts as they worked through the process – likening it to the well documented cycle of grief. Not that I want you to be sad by the process! I thought it was an interesting view and the client agreed that it might help others if I shared.

My first reaction was one of denial – “I can’t believe that this could possibly work. It can’t be THAT simple.”

Then came the anger – “Why did I think I could DO this? I can’t figure out enough of the first step to move on! What was I thinking?”

Bargaining was my next step – “Maybe if I just do a little at a time and not be in such a hurry to finish it all. Just ONE step at a time.”

Later depression set in – “Oh! There’s no way I’m going to improve! What’s the point of EVEN trying?”

And finally, acceptance – “It’s starting to make sense. I think I GOT IT! I’ve tried it out in short moments and I’m starting to see a small difference! Hurray!”

Not all will experience this emotional roller coaster during the process, but if you DO, it’s OK. Everyone will react and respond differently. It’s like the first time at the gym or trying anything new. Whether it’s muscles or your mindset, you have to be prepared for the ups and downs. Just continue to move forward at your own pace.

So, as you can see, it IS indeed a process. And it IS a change! Most of us don’t really like change. This is making a change to something that we do – every single day! Communicate!
