Anchor- Certain Anchors

By Linda Sherwin / December 2, 2018

Why are Anchors important?

Ask any sailor, and they will tell you! The anchor holds a ship in place, keeps it from drifting and makes it readily available for you.

An excerpt from my book: “The third step in the process is ANCHOR. That means anchoring the character, holding the role that you have identified in place, and being able to call on that particular role immediately whenever you need it. The anchor can be a word or a gesture. Actors often use a gesture to get and keep them in character even while on stage. As an actor or a business person, you may not have time to consciously think about how you should be at a particular moment. Using your anchor allows you to immediately “be” in that state.”

It’s a simple process that takes a little time, but once you have it, you can call on any of your characters – authentically YOU! – whenever you want or need to.

First of all, you find the memory and recall it in as much detail as possible. Then you find the “anchor” which will hold that memory in place and make it readily available for you. Just like a real anchor on a ship!

As I mention in my book, “Two factors required in business today – authenticity and speed. When you are genuine with people, they respond in kind. It leaves no room for second-guessing or mixed messages. Speed is essential in today’s business world. When you can respond quickly and authentically in any situation, you have an enormous advantage. Clients, vendors and colleagues all recognize it whether consciously or not and respond to it.”

You may not get that second chance, so you want to “hit your mark” on the first try.
