The Impact of Body Language

People do it all the time. You are always communicating something to someone whether you realize it or not. Whether you are talking to a colleague or a friend, using some sort of technology, or simply walking around, you are communicating and telling people either what you need, what you are doing, or what you are thinking.

In every communication, there are three parts:
The sender
The message
The recipient of the message

Any one of those steps can make a huge difference in what happens after the communication takes place. It’s important that people understand that they are communicating all the time, and for every communication, there will always be a result. Some results may be good, some results terrible, and others somewhere in between, but there will always be a result to every communication that occurs.

When you’re talking face-to‐face with people, you will have both the verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication at your disposal – your voice and your body language. Think of your facial expressions, your eye contact, and your gestures as a means to add to your message. Again, in our global marketplace, different cultures view any variations on these as welcoming or repulsive. If your work necessitates working with different cultures or travelling to different countries, you would do well to research acceptable forms of behavior.
