The Theatre of Business?

The theatre of business?

People have often asked me why I used a theatre analogy in my book to talk about businesssuggesting that the two were at opposite ends of the spectrum.

It was actually a melding of my two passions – theatre and business – that were staring me in the face!

Let’s look at the similarities of a hit show and a successful business and what some of the challenges might be:

Both use a large number of people to achieve their desired results – some front and centre and others behind the scenes, but all necessary to make things happen. But a diva in the theatre or in the business can have a devastating effect or if someone forgets to do their small part of the process, the whole production can come to a halt.

Everyone is using the same script or mission and knows what they want to accomplish. But someone working “off script” in either instance can create chaos.

Both have a leader or director who has the vision needed to obtain the results. But in either case, what if that person is not respected and their choices are not followed to achieve the desired end or someone else thinks they know better?

Whether a theatre audience or a business customer, it’s important that they are kept happy and get what they paid for. That takes everyone doing their part and working towards that goal. But just one bad experience will have the audience leave or the customer going elsewhere.

I could go on and on with examples of how the two are similar.

But I think one of the most important aspects that my clients have told me was that it took them out of their comfort zone. They weren’t reading a regular business tome that while providing excellent advice, kept them in their secure and usual mindset.

By changing that up, it meant they had to look at themselves in their business life a little differently. They had to realize that they had a variety of characters to choose from and if portrayed authentically, they could get the results they wanted.

Many were very surprised to see the results after doing the voice exercises in the Powerful Performance Process – stretching of the tongue, scrunching of the face and humming! And they said it was fun!
